PROPERTY FROM THE ROBERT W. AND MEE-DIN MOORE COLLECTION A LARGE BLACK AND RED TIXI ( GURI ) LACQUER ROUNDED BOX AND COVERProbably late-Ming period, 17th century Deeply carved through many layers of black and red lacquer to the domed cover and flat top with a design of four pommels and other scroll forms around a central stylized eight-petal flower-head, the domed sides of the cover and box with twelve large pommels, a gilt copper rim to the box, cover and foot ring; Japanese box. 11 3/4in (29.8cm) diam 或明晚期 十七世紀 剔犀如意雲紋圓蓋盒 The addition of a metal body to support the large size of this vessel inbination with the grooved border encircling the design on the cover, along with a slightly whimsical rendition of the 'pommel' design, suggests a date in the seventeenth century. For a smaller box and cover dated to the 16th century with additional thin layers of cinnabar to highlight the design, see Christie's, London, 5 November 2012, lot 179 and another sold at Christie's, Hong Kong, 30 May 2012, lot 4225. For a much smaller tixi (guri) lacquer rounded box and cover dated to the fifteenth/sixteenth century, see , 15 March 2021, lot 110.
