What a wonderful example of Majolica by the American potter Griffen, Smith, Hill who designed under the trade name of “Etruscan”. This piece has raised relief in the forms of overlapping seashells in gorgeous colors of pink beige and brown. Green seaweed accents the bottom and handle. The glaze is still bright and shines. It does have some wear on the raised relief, please see pictures for condition. This piece is in excellent condition with only a few flakes on the rim. Please see pictures for condition. IT IS RARE TO FIND MAJOLICA IN "LIKE NEW" CONDITION BECAUSE OF WEAR FROM USE AND AGE. TINY GLAZE FLAKES AND CRAZING IF PRESENT IS NORMAL AND ADDS CHARACTER TO EACH PIECE. Griffen, Smith and Hill pottery of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania produced some of the most collectible American majolica from 1879 to 1892. They incorporated designs from nature using flowers, ferns, cauliflower, butterflies, sea shells, corn, begonia, maple, oak leaves, etc. Their Shell and Seaweed pattern was produced in a full line of dinner, coffee, and tea service brought the pottery high recognition.
