With obvious classical inspiration based on ancient Roman models and unusually fine gilding, this piece wants to be held in the hand and admired from all sides. Classical medallions with busts are suspended from floral swags against a white background. This approach to decoration gained immense popularity after the excavations at Pompeii and the spread of the artistic influence of the ancient discoveries. It is four and a half inches in diameter. Extensive wear to the top of the gilded rim and a little normal surface wear, but otherwise in wonderful, bright condition.
