Presented for sale is a matched pair of figural sweetmeat dishes modeled by James Hadley for Royal Worcester featuring figures by Kate Greenaway. The boy and girl are atypically dressed in 18th century clothing, and each stands beside a large woven basket. The pair are impressed and stamp-signed on the base. Kate Greenaway was a 19th century artist and writer known for her children’s book illustrations. She was fond of dressing them in 18th century attire. James Hadley worked for Royal Worcester before leaving to form his own factory. He was one of the best and most respected modellers of the 19th century. Sweetmeat was a 19th century delicacy and many serving pieces were dedicated to its presentation. The purely cream/white ground is beautifully contrasted with gilding, the only color being the faces of the children and their hair. These pieces would be perfect for a formal presentation of nuts or sweets. They are both in excellent condition. Size: 8” Height by 7 ½” Length.
