Scarce Pearlware Flow Blue Transfer Printed Miniature Plate Girl with Pet Lamb Staffordshire England c 1820 This is an exquisite Staffordshire transferware miniature pictorial cup plate, measuring a mere 3-3/8 inches in diameter. The plate would have been made as part of a child’s toy dinner service or play tea set, with many varied scenes of childhood amusements and juvenile sports depicted on the various plates. Transfer printed in rich cobalt flow blue with a light pearlware glaze, it is decorated with a whimsical design depicting a young girl with her arm around her pet lamb. The plate is unmarked except for a tiny tally mark, and the exact maker is unknown. It most likely hails from the Staffordshire potting region in England, though it may have been made by one of the Welsh or Scottish potteries, c. 1830. The plate is in great condition, especially considering its age and use by generations of children. There are no chips, cracks, or repairs. The plate was well potted and the transfer was carefully applied. A bit of a ruddy glazed from the firing, adding to the winsome charm of the piece. A fine example of early English folk art potting. The quality of the decoration and detailing is outstanding. Little plates and tea sets made as baby christening presents, gifts for good children and school rewards of merit to aid in children’s education and amusement. A perfect gift for the collector of childhood imagery and children with their pastimes.
