此砚为澄泥烧制而成，大方而古仆，应是明代之物，澄泥砚的制作与雕刻在明代大有发展，砚的色泽大大增加，佳者有鳝鱼黄、蟹壳青、绿豆砂、玫瑰紫、朱砂红等。此砚呈朱砂红色，砚体硕大厚重，近圆形，雕略如荷叶式，砚堂平展，墨池下陷，砚边作荷叶反卷，雕工质朴，砚质细腻、匀净，为澄泥砚中少见之品。
