Description

This pair of agate or marblized shakers are handmade pottery and probablye from the late 19th century. Their original purpose was for shaking sugar or spices unto prepared food. They do not seem to be have been used for salt and pepper. It appears that the color has been applied rather than being part of the clay as in agate ware. The design is reminiscent of mochaware or mocha. There are holes for corks to the bottom of each, and one has had the cork pushed into the body of the shaker. The stilt marks from the kiln are visible on the bottoms of each. One shaker is slightly larger than the other. They are in outstanding condition with a beautiful shiny glaze, and free of any knocks or chips. They are 3 inches tall and about 2 inches wide.
