Description
Translation provided by Youdao
A covered vegetable dish or tureen from circa 1800. It is oval in form, topped with a knop in the form of a gilded lion in a recumbent position. Both tureen and cover are painted with flower specimens, “Double Dwarf Eastern Poppy” and “Gum Cistus” (Rock Rose). The Cistus flower wasmonly used for extracting Laudanum or ‘tincture of opium.’ The ground of midnight blue with gold foliage is inspired by Japanese Imari and Chinese export pieces. The tureen and cover are in very good condition for their age. There is a repair to the lion knop, but no other chips, cracks or repairs. There is typical crazing to the glaze, and small firing faults such as minor bubbling to the glaze, as shown in the photos. The tureen measures 10” (26cm) in length and 7½” (19cm) in width, the height with the cover is 5” (13cm). It is unmarked. A highly decorative piece of porcelain and a wonderful example of the craftsman of the Georgian age.
