This stunning 9-3/4" plate was decorated in the English "Japan pattern" known to Coalport collectors as "Crab Claw". It is in excellent (but not perfect) condition. There is wear to 2 of the green enameled leaves. There is wear to some of the gilding. There is a tiny chip on the edge, more visible from the back. There are no cracks, no crazing, and no other chips. The plate rings when tapped. The twist is...this was made by John Rose's brother Thomas, of the Anstice, Horton, and Rosepany. The Thomas Rose Coalport wares are much scarcer than John's, as his firm was in business for only 10 years, from 1803-1813. In Coalport's early years there were two potteries, one run by John Rose and the other by his brother Thomas Rose. Thomas Rose went into partner with Robert Anstice and Robert Horton and they were located directly across the canal from John Rose's works. Althoughpetitors, the brothers' factories "shared" many shapes and patterns. The only way to distinguish them is by the pattern numbers. This plate is a standard Coalport "lobed edge" shape. The Thomas Rose pattern number 826 is painted in gold on the back. Note: Also see the John Rose version of the "Crab Claw" pattern in the trio for sale here in my shop.
