121116-2/RL-1006 This is a 19th century French Haviland & Co Limoges hard paste porcelain spittoon or cuspidor. The date is circa 1891 to 1900.. The spittoon is 4 ¾” high and 8 5/8” wide at the mouth. The antique cuspidors are used today for wine tasting, at the wineries and private wine tasting functions, rather than the modern metal buckets. I live in the heart of the Oregon wine region, so items like this bubble up in the local estates that are linked to the wineries. The wine is tasted, swirled around in the mouth, then spit out into the spittoon. Then on to tasting the next wine and repeat. This spittoon has scrolls and lines in the blank. The rim has indentations with a gold trim brushed on around the edge. There is a solid line of gold at the bottom of the flared mouth. The transfer pattern is one of purple and lavender violets with green and purple leaves. There are no chips, nicks or crazing. However there are a few glaze skips in the interior and some ash flecks in the glaze; the glaze skips shows as lines in the glaze and are part of the manufacturing process. The green underglaze factory mark is CFH underscored by GDM followed by France. CFH is for Charles Field Haviland. GDM is for Gerard, Dufraisseix and Morel, the owners of thepany after Charles Field Haviland, yet considered still to be a Havilandpany
