This rare porcelain tea cup and saucer was produced in England during the late 18th century, circa 1785. The hand painted decoration is of the highest quality, the translucency of the greyish tone paste body is excellent. This is one the best examples we have seen of a ‘shanked’ (diagonally ribbed) cup and saucer. The flower sprays and intertwined garland and ribbon design have been painted by a talented artist at a quality factory; the artist has even managed to show a change in tone in the ribbon. The use of black contrasting to the bright pinks and greens of the flowers is most unusual; we have not seen this before let alone incorporated with the inner en grisaille (shades of grey and black) and gilt palette of flowers. The scalloped gilt rims equally attractive Both pieces are unmarked; however having owned many ‘shanked’ pieces we can say that this cup and saucer were certainly produced by a quality factory. The detail of the painting and the use of the flowing ribbon would certainly be in line with pieces produced by Worcester, Bristol, Chelsea Derby and Pinxton. It is remarkable that both pieces have remained together and in such good condition for over 200 years. Measuring: Cup width including handle 3.5 inch (9 cm) by height 2.5 inch (6.5 cm). Saucer diameter 5.5 inch (14 cm). Condition: Small factory underglaze chip and tiny graze to the foot rim of the cup. This is the perfect item for anyone who collects rare and decorative early English pottery and porcelain. This is a fine example, this could be the only opportunity to own such a piece.
