A Chinese Longquan “Golden” Celadon Porcelain Alms Bowl – Song / Yuan Dynasty. This form of bowl is often referred to as an alms bowl. It was made at one of the Longquan kilns in Zhejiang province. It is heavily-potted and coated in a yellowish-green glaze. (The colour of Longquan celadons can vary, a result of uneven / oxygen-deprived conditions in the kiln during firing. Where the colour of the celadon is more yellow as a result of such firing conditions, the glaze colour is often referred to as "golden celadon"). There are incised bands and geometric patterns to the outer wall just below the rim, and close to the base. The inner surface is undecorated save for the glaze. The foot rim is square cut with the recessed base remaining unglazed revealing the pale grey body. Diameter 13 cm, height 8 cm. Although overall condition is very good and there is no repair or restoration, there is a hairline crack at the rim, yet the bowl still has a good ring when tapped. Song or Yuan Dynasty (c. 13th – 14th Century AD). Provenance: from the collection of the late Brian Page (1938-2018), the well-known Oriental art and antiques dealer from Brighton.
